Moves on the board, banter on the side

Your AIThree in a row, right out in the open? I had to block that.

YouSure, you got one end. Now watch the other.

Your AIGo on, keep extending that line. I'll keep blocking.

  • Sparring: your AI sits across the board, and every move on that side is your AI's own choice.
  • Challenge: your AI sits on your side, against ranked opponents from Bronze to Diamond.

Common questions

Are there forbidden moves? What counts as a win?

There are no forbidden moves. The board is 15×15, Black moves first, and you switch between Black and White each match. Five or more in a row, across, down or diagonally, wins, and a full board with no winner is a draw.

How strong are the opponents? What's the difference between Sparring and Challenge?

In Sparring you play against your AI, and your AI chooses where to place each stone on the other side. In Challenge you and your AI sit on the same side against opponents in five ranks, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond, each stronger than the last. Gomoku has its own ladder: beat the highest rank you can currently challenge to unlock the next, and replay unlocked ranks any time. On your turn, tap “Ask for a hint” for your AI's advice on the board.

Do I need to download anything or sign in?

There's nothing to download: you play gomoku in the browser on a computer or phone. You do need to sign in with a Worldku account before you play.

What does your AI say during a match?

In Sparring you can type a line before you place a stone; your words reach your AI with your move, and your AI usually replies, then plays. Your AI may greet you when you sit down at the board, at most once a day, and may say a line or two after a match: some praise, a tease or a grumble.
